A Student’s Perspective of Adult Day Care
January 2014 – Hello, my name is Jillian Markham and I am the SUNY Fredonia Social Work intern at the Chautauqua Adult Day Care Taft Center.
Before I began my internship at CADC, I was unsure what I should expect from my time there. I had heard about the program from teachers and other students who had been placed there, however, I was a bit skeptical about my placement what types of experiences I would gain from the agency. What I did not know was that I would be introduced to some of the most wonderful people and programs in Chautauqua County.
The CADC program offers daytime activities to seniors in the community, but the participants who come to the center are lively and young at heart people who continue to make my time there worthwhile. From spending one on one time to playing card games, the participants will welcome you into their groups and provide you with stories and jokes that will keep you captivated.
The staff at the Taft Center works daily to ensure that the participants are gaining the socialization and recreation within the community that they and their families desire. From dining out to traveling with the Happy Grams Choir, I have experienced many aspects of the participant’s time at the center. During my first weeks of my internship, I was able to work with the participants to donate five bags of shredded paper from the center to the local Humane Society, which happened to be a personal interest of mine as well as some of the participants.
Working closely with others within the Social Work office, I get to invest my time working one on one with certain participants to help them create goals and make sure their time at the center is rewarding and fulfilling. CADC works with clients in order to help them explore their interests while providing them with the support to help them pursue a variety of options they have while at the day program. My experience here has helped me gain a greater understanding of the geriatric population and has assisted me in creating wonderful relationships with participants and staff alike.
Looking back at how skeptical I was when I first began my internship, I now see how much I have grown. The clients and staff have taught me so much which has helped me grow into the type of person I want to be.
